General

North Smithfield is located in Providence County, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 10,618.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 64.1 km² (24.7 mi²). 62.3 km² (24.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.83% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,618 people, 3,954 households, and 2,957 families residing in the town. The population density is 170.5/km² (441.7/mi²). There are 4,070 housing units at an average density of 65.4/km² (169.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.32% White, 0.42% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,954 households out of which 31.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.0% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 21.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $58,602, and the median income for a family is $67,331. Males have a median income of $43,133 versus $30,748 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,031. 3.5% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
